Creatures are the natural enemies (or not..) in Meridian 59. By killing them you can earn Hit Points and train most of your school abilities. To be able to earn Hit Points, the creature must not exceed their own hit point limit. On skill increases it depends on the creature heavily. Simply try out different ones to get a feeling for that.
